Jack Hayes Receives Medal Winners’ Trophy

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Jack Hayes receives the first prize for the Medal Winner’s Chalice from Captain, Rod Sumner

Few people show the sort of dedication to winning a Club competition as did Jack Hayes. He flew in and out from Ireland for the one day of the Medal Winner’s Chalice…and then went and won it. We couldn’t give him his trophy on the day, as he was already on the way back to the airport. So, on Wednesday, we were delighted to see him playing in the Men’s Day Singles Stableford, and could give him his winner’s prize.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Julie Heel receives trophy from Lady Captain, Jane Gardner

Last Tuesday the ladies played their Monthly Medal together with the Seniors Trophy which was won by Julie Heel with an excellent net 67. Anne Elmore was runner up with a net 68. Both won their respective divisional medals, and Ann Sergelius won the 9 hole competition on the same day. Following the competition there was interest in having a ‘Super Seniors’ competition to run alongside the Seniors Trophy, for members who are over 70 or over 75. This will be considered by the Golf Committee at a future meeting.

Suitably adorned, the Captains award prizes to Sunday winner’s Jane & Ross Reason

Easter Sunday was celebrated by those who participated in the Sunday Mixed Competition. The fourball Stableford competition was won by Ross & Jane Reason with 42 points beating Peter & Jane Beale on countback. To enter into the spirit of the occasion there were chocolate Easter eggs galore on the 10th tee, and, when presenting the prizes, the Captains donned Easter bonnets (as pictured above).

Michael Hickey Cleans Up the Veterans Trophies

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Michael Hickey receives the Veterans Club Championship Trophy from the Captain, Rod Sumner.

The Men combined their Monthly Medal, last Wednesday, with the Veterans Competitions, which comprises 2 events – the best gross who becomes the Veterans Club Champion, and the best net, who wins the Veteran’s Vase. On a glorious windless day, the best result managed by a field of over 40 men was a net 75 scored by Michael Hickey, who also returned the best gross score of 79, and he therefore made a clean sweep of the Veteran’s prizes. Peter Heel won the 2nd Division medal with a net 76.

St.George Awaits on 23rd April

170417 stgdayNext Sunday the Club celebrates one of our oldest national day holidays, St.George’s Day. Never mind that St.George never visited England, never fought a dragon, and almost certainly never swilled real ale or swallowed roast beef, every year on 23rd April the English mark has saint’s day as their very own. Come and join in the festivities which start with a golf competition in the morning (red and white apparel obligatory) followed by lunch and entertainment. Golfers should sign in via the booking system, while non-golfers should register on the list outside the Spike Bar.

Ben Hogan Trophy Match Coming Soon

170417 stgComing up in May is the annual Ben Hogan Trophy – a 2 day match against Pinheiros Altos, now in its 13th year. The format of the match is 10 pairings of ladies and mens fourballs at Pinheiros Altos on Friday 12th May. This is followed on Saturday 13th May with 20 pairs of mixed fourballs at Quinta do Lago. The competition is rounded off with a lunch hosted by CGQL in the Captain’s Lounge for players and non-playing guests, at which the Trophy will be awarded to the winning Club. The total entry fee is €35 per player, including (at both venues) welcome coffees and  buggies, and the final lunch at Quinta. Please watch out for the entry list outside the Spike Bar.

Buggy Signage Around the Course

170417 buggyAll buggy signage has been removed from the approach to the greens on both courses and replaced with automatic warnings that appear on the GPS system in the hired buggies. The warning is activated if you stray closer than between 90 and 100 metres from the green, and you must then make your way back to the buggy path. Members who use their own buggy must still respect these distances even though there are no longer specific signs on the course.

A Little Lesson in Buggy Etiquette (Competitions)

It would appear that it is not uncommon for a player in a competition, who has booked a buggy and arrives at the clubhouse on time, to find that their playing partner has either gone to the driving range or the first tee. The “stranded” player usually finds this out when he/she attempts to collect a buggy. Please give consideration to your fellow competitors and follow the simple rules below:

  • If you choose to go to the driving range for a pre-competition warm up, using a buggy, be sure to be back at the clubhouse at least 15 minutes before your tee time. Do NOT go straight to the tee box.
  • If you have collected a buggy that you expect to share you should wait for your fellow golfer at the clubhouse until 10 minutes prior to you tee time.

Competition Time Sheets are displayed in the Changing Room corridors, and each competitor will have the letter “T” = trolley or “B” = buggy signifying their choice of golf bag transport. Be aware that someone may be sharing your buggy and may be trying to find you!

Message From the Captains

170410 ladyc

Jane Gardner received her jacket from Marianne Jespersen (left) , and Rod Sumner received his from Terry Williams (right).

Firstly Rod & Jane would like to thank all those members who wished them well for their year following the Annual Dinner and the Drive-in. They would like to remind members that there are a whole series of photographs from the dinner now available on the Club photo gallery website. These picture can be downloaded from the website. Please see the short explanation below as to how to do this. Rod would also like to point out to the men that he has changed the competition on 26th April to a bogey par. This is so that the Algarve League players, who will miss next week’s Stableford, will have a chance to get in a further qualifying competition this month.

Irish Rugby Players at Men’s Day

From left to right: Rod Sumner, Captain CGQL, Eion O’Malley, Cian Healy, Brian Murphy (Vice-Captain).

We were delighted to welcome 2 stalwarts of Irish Rugby to the Club last Wednesday as guests of Vice-Captain Brian Murphy. Eion O’Malley played for Ireland U-19’s and U-20’s before playing for Leinster in the Magners League. Unfortunately due to injury he had to retire in 2013 and the age of 25. Cian Healy is well known to all 6 Nations enthusiasts for his 67 caps for Ireland as a prop forward. His most memorable match was when he was named Man of the Match at Eden Park when Ireland beat Australia in September 2011. He still plays for Leinster, for whom he has made over 150 appearances. The Captain quipped that its alright for rugby players, who only have to play 40 minutes each way with a 10 minutes rest in between, whereas golfers have to suffer for a full four and a half hours! Eion and Cian quietly reminded the Captain (who is English) of what exactly was the score in Dublin a few weeks back. A good time was had by all!

Stunning Whitewash Victory Over Vila Sol

The Algarve League team had a great victory against Vila Sol at home last Friday winning overall 5-0 with most matches finishing well before the 18th hole. Vila Sol arrived with 8 of the 10 players that were part of the league one winning side of 2 years ago but our team of Tony Brown & Jane Beale, Martin Wilson & Di Mucklow, Charlotte Johnston & David Hess, Val Tassell & Richard Harrison, and Jane Gardner & Peter Beale were just too strong for them. Our next match is away at Carveiro on 19th April. Would any members who are available to play that day please let Peter Beale know as soon as possible.

E-Cigarettes May Not Be Smoked in the Clubhouse

170410 vaping

Not in the clubhouse!

The Executive Board recently ruled that members and guests may not use e-cigarettes inside the clubhouse. Although e-cigarettes have been around for some time, it was only recently that the subject was raised, and the Board ruled, that, although they recognise that the vapour emanating from an e-cigarette is not comparable to the smoke from cigarette or cigar, it is still, in smaller form, a pollutant and therefore its use inside the building will irritate other users.

Driving Range Closure Over Easter

Due to Easter activities, the Club has been informed by SGQL that the driving range will be closed in the morning on Sunday the 16th of April 2017, and will only re-open from 14h00 onwards. SGQL apologises for any inconvenience that this causes, and once again thanks you for your cooperation.

The Distance Markers Have Disappeared

Members will note that, at the moment, there are no distance markers on the edge of the fairways. This is because new markers are being introduced with embedded footings , so that the green staff know exactly where each marker must be returned to after mowing. The old markers were causing confusion as they were showing different distances to the GPS on the buggies and so have been removed until the new signage is ready. In the meantime, the plates in the middle of the fairways remain as the distance guide to those who do not have GPS or laser measuring equipment.

Captains Changeover and Drive-In

Captain Rod Sumner & Lady Captain Jane Gardner

On Saturday night, at a sparkling dinner at the Quinta do Lago Hotel, 163 members and guests shared the moment when our Captains become ‘Pasts’ and our Vice Captains became Captains. The simple donning of the green jacket was the symbolic moment when Rod Sumner and Jane Gardner took over the reigns from Terry William and Marianne Jespersen. And then on Sunday afternoon, after a very well attended Fourball Stableford competition won by Philip and Carolyn Cort, just as the sun was going down, Rod and Jane drove into office with 2 well hit drives. The Vice-Captains, Brian Murphy and Diana Mucklow, had sold lots of markers to be placed in the fairway to guess where the drives would end, raising nearly €1400 for charity. The winners of the champagne were Rupert Mucklow and Aileen Hickey. It all rounded of a very good AGM Week. The new Captains would like to express their thanks to all the members who so kindly offered their congratulations and good wishes for the year ahead. They hope this sentiment continues for another 364 days!

Gardner & Chase-Gardener Win Club Championships

The Men’s and Ladies Club Championships were held over 2 days last week, with both competitions finishing on the North Course on Friday. There was a certain symmetry to both events as there were clear leaders after day 1, with Jane Gardner, having shot a 76 (net 68), taking a 6 shot lead into the second day, and Julio Mendes, who shot 75 (net 69) on day 1, three shots clear of the chasers. Day 2 on the North Course was altogether more challenging, as Val Tassell made a comeback for the Ladies, although not quite by enough to overtake Jane’s first day lead. In the end Jane won by 3 shots from Val, with a total gross score of 155, and was declared a worthy Club Champion for the second time.

Day 2 for the Men’s event saw the three leading scorers, Julio Mendes, John Farrell, and Paul Chase-Gardener have a torrid time, so much so that it was with some surprise that on entering the clubhouse. Paul and Julio discovered that they were still in the lead and tied on 159. So, for the 2nd time in three years, the Men’s Club Championship headed down to the 1st tee of the North for a sudden death play-off. Having halved the 1st in par, Julio then struck his tee shot on the 2nd into the water, while Paul put his safely 20 feet from the pin. Julio hit a 2nd from the tee onto the green, about 15 feet from the hole, but was now lying 3 to Paul’s 1. Paul knew he had 2 putts for the championship, but the first putt was aided by a little adrenalin, and instead of lagging up before the pin, went a couple of feet by. Julio then just missed his putt and recorded a five, easing any tension that his opponent may have been feeling. One more putt and Paul Chase-Gardener, who only joined the Club in 2016, was declared Club Champion for 2017. The Club Championship Trophies and Prizes were awarded at the Annual & Captain’s Dinner.

Other winners on the Friday were Aileen Hickey and Martin Burns, the respective winners of the Mimosa Cup and the Ria Formosa Cup, the net competitions run at the same time as the Club Championship. Aileen won with a score of 141 beating Jane Gardner into the runner-up position thanks to a better net score (69) on day 2. Martin Burns (143) won the Men’s net competition by 2 strokes from Simon Blair (146).

The Ladies Say Goodbye to Marianne

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

The Ladies gather around Marianne Jespersen on the outside terrace of the Captain’s Lounge

Last Tuesday, on Lady Captain’s Day, the ladies said farewell to their Captain, Marianne Jespersen, for the 2016/2017 season. In a break from tradition, Marianne played in the competition, and ended on the winning team of the AM-AM Stableford with Diana Mucklow, Brenda Brown and Janet Dodd. The 60 plus attendees then sat down to a Mexican themed lunch, with a further prize being awarded to Val Tassell for winning the birdie tree. The Ladies gave Marianne some special presents which included  an embroidered jersey with the words ‘Quinta do Lago, Lady Captain 2016/2017’, and a similarly embroidered set of oven gloves! It was a great send off for a popular Lady Captain.

The Graysons and Julio Mendes Awarded Gold Medals

At the Annual & Captain’s Dinner, the Club invited a table of dignitaries from the Portuguese Golf Federation to make some special awards to Quinta do Lago members. Introduced by previous Federation President, Manuel Agrellos, the Federation gave out their highest accolade, the gold medal merit award, to Eric Grayson, Denise Grayson, and Julio Mendes for their 17 years of service to the Handicap and Course Rating Committee, which has transformed not only the management of handicaps within Portugal, but has significantly influenced the way that handicaps are administered across continental Europe. The recipients of these awards were given a standing ovation by the members present.
