26th May 2014

Introduction

Another busy week in the Club with great participation in all regular fixtures plus the Captains’ and Past Captains’ Classic on Friday and a ‘friendly’ match against our long standing friends from Donaghadee on Saturday. In all – including the “unofficial roll ups”  Monday and Thursday – more than 175 members had a competitive club game during the week. Add to that all the private games. Well done everybody.  CGQL is definitely alive and and going from strength to strength – as the pictures in this newsletter show, we are unbeaten on the 19th hole!

Friendly Draw with Donaghadee Golf Club

140526 donaghadee

Saturday saw the friendly competition against Donaghadee Golf Club (from Northern Ireland) expertly arranged by Trevor Kelly. There were 5 hard fought match play matches of which all, apart from one, were close and the overall result was an honorable (and friendly to our guests) draw. This means that Donaghadee GC retains the trophy – for the time being. Once the golf was finished, both teams sat down to enjoy João’s cooking and Rosa’s hospitality followed by some typical Irish and Portuguese drinks……..guess what! All in all a lovely day. After 13 annual matches the current status is 8 wins to CGQL, 4 wins to Donaghadee, and one draw.

Captain’s and Past Captains’ Classic

140526 lunch

The traditional gathering of the esteemed Past Captains took place on Friday with 22 entries to the Captains’ and Past Captains’ Classic . This is a unisex match, with the unusual twist that there is a trophy both for the winner and for the runner-up. This years winner with 40 points your very own Lady Captain Julie Heel and runner up was David Allsop with 38 points.
The golf is traditionally followed by a most enjoyable beach lunch and this year was no exception. Once again we were entertained at Antonio’s, where much needed sustenance was provided in abundance.

New Members

We are delighted to welcome Alistair Fox (handicap 8) and his son Archie (aged 14 with a handicap of 4) as new members to the Club. They are also members at The Wisley Golf Club in England. We hope they enjoy their time as members of CGQL.

Limited Certificates

This month marks the first year since the 20 year titles were introduced and it is very pleasing to note that 15 certificates have been taken up and as a result 19 new members have joined. Whilst this is a very encouraging start to the initiative we need to build on this initial success and any ideas you have regarding attracting new members are welcome. Remember that we are all the best “sales” people for our club so let’s keep the momentum going. Copies of the membership brochure are available from the office, and full details of the membership terms and conditions can be found on the club website.

Celebrating a Birthday on Ladies Day

140526 gibsonAfter a challenging Singles Stableford on Laranjal, the Ladies were greeted to a pleasant surprise when they got back to the clubhouse – a cake supplied by Margaret Gibson to celebrate her birthday. It would not be proper to disclose her score, so to speak, but we wish her many happy returns for the future. Thanks Margaret for the cake!
