Phillips win Thistle Trophy

Karen & Nick Phillips receive the trophy from the Captain, Peter Shaw, and St.Andrew’s Day organiser, Buffie Wilson.

We had another glorious sunny day on Sunday to welcome the 84 players competing in this year’s St Andrew’s Day event hoping to win the Thistle Trophy – played in the traditional Scottish format of foursomes. Many of the competitors were appropriately attired in national colours or tartans which added greatly to the atmosphere.Winning the Thistle Trophy this year with an excellent 43 points were Nick and Karen Phillips, four shots clear of second place, Martin Wilson and his guest Christine Simpson. In third with 38 points were Byron and Philippa Clancey just ahead of Keith and Therese Collins on countback. And in fifth were Charles Robson and Catriona Porter on 36. Nearest the pins went to Jacqui Barry, Denise Grayson and Malcolm Dodd. Winning the longest drives with the Hickory Sticks were Catriona Porter and Peter Beale.

After the golf we were royally entertained by Jean-Yves playing the bagpipes this year in the absence of Alan Robertson. As always we were treated to an excellent meal by Gareth, Cristiano, Katy and team washed down by copious amounts of wine, water, beer, whisky, Drambuie, Atholl Brose and Rusty Nails.

As ever, everyone enjoyed the pre and post meal atmosphere and many people contributed to make that happen. Special thanks are due to Phillipa Clancey and Buffie Wilson (and Byron and Steve behind the scenes) for all their efforts which ensured we had a great day. We were also indebted to Keith Macall for his wit and repartee, Maurice and Angie Boyle for the Atholl Brose, our halfway house team (Maureen, Gordon, Mary and Sally) and many others behind the scenes. Finally many thanks to Blevins Franks for their support and especially Dan Henderson for his help with the beat the scratch golfer challenge.

Another very successful National Day to round off 2023. Many thanks to all members for their support today and throughout the year. To view photos of the event please follow this link: https://tinyurl.com/cgqlthistle2023

The Past Captains gathering

Chairpersons of the Past Captains and Past Lady Captains Committees, Brian Murphy and Diana Mucklow.

On Friday last the Past Captains, Ladies and Gentlemen, competed for the David Phillips Trophy. Eleven members of both sections played a 9 hole competition on the South Course. The Gentlemen prevailed having a greater combined aggregate score than the Ladies, the Trophy was presented that evening by Diana Mucklow, Lady’s Chair to Brian Murphy, Gentlemen’s Chair. Individual best scores came from Jackie Borrett and Rod Sumner who were each presented with the newly designed club shirt (now available to order from the office)

Preceding the dinner both Past Captains Committees met to approve of the nominees for incoming Vice Captains 2024/5. The nominees, already announced, received enthusiastic unanimous approval. The Past Captain’s Committees also agreed to amalgamation for future meetings under joint chairpersons however Vice Captain approval will remain autonomous. Dinner was held that evening in Tucanos where the President, Tony Brown and his wife Brenda were honoured guests of the Past Captains. A total of 42 including partners and guests attended. Jorrit Feldpausch, who was preparing to celebrate his 88th birthday the following day, attended with his two daughters and grandson. Jorrit kindly invited the gathering to partake of champagne with his compliments.

Dribbler Dinner (7th December)

Any men who wish to attend the Dribbler Dinner on 7th December at Figueral must have entered on the sheet beside the lift in the clubhouse by close on Tuesday (28th November) so we can give the restaurant numbers and menu choices (really mainly to help with staffing more than anything). Thank you for your rapid attendance to this!

Captain wins the Challenge Series for the 2023/24 season.

The fourth edition of this season’s Captain v Vice Captain challenge took place in glorious sunshine today on North. When we did the draw yesterday both Patrick and I were sure the odds favoured the VC’s team. The VC himself certainly delivered in his singles challenge but thereafter there was a veritable cascade of results in the Captain’s favour, with the exception of a couple of matches, resulting in a resounding 8 1/2 to 2 1/2 win for the Captain. It just shows what we know! This makes the five match series 3 – 1 in favour of the Captain. As a result of the series effectively being decided we will use the final date (yet to be decided) for a matchplay challenge in a different format. More to follow on that in the New Year. Thanks to everyone for their participation in this year’s Captain v Vice Captain challenges – they have been enormous fun, and always generated a great atmosphere in the bar afterwards.

Dee Garvin’s team go ‘one up’ in the penultimate match of the series.

A glorious day for the 4th challenge match today played on the South course. There were seven matches in total and everyone entered into the spirit of playing for their drawn side, LC or LVC. The result was a resounding victory for the LVC side, winning 4 1/2 to 2 1/2. This means that overall the LVC is 1 up in the series with 1 match to play early next year.   As is tradition, complimentary snacks were served post golf and we were treated to a visit from Lis Esterle, with her fabulous range of golf clothing. Very handy indeed with Christmas around the corner! https://www.esterlgolf.com Well played everyone and thanks for making it such an enjoyable day.

Paulette Wilson & Garry Nettleingham triumph in President’s Putter

President’s Putter winners Gary Nettleingham (left) and Paulette Wilson (right) receive the trophy and prizes from Club President Tony Brown and the Captains.

Another glorious day greeted the players for this year’s President’s Putter, an Honour’s Board event. Once again there were some challenging pins that meant everyone needed to have their best short game with them to score well. Club President Tony Brown was with us to make the presentations in the very convivial atmosphere in the Spike Bar after the golf.

In the Ladies event the scoring at the top was very tight. In fourth place with 36 points and losing on countback was Nicola McCormack. In third also with 36 points was Denise Grayson. Runner up with a very good 37 (19 on the back nine) was Val Harrison. Our 2023 Trophy winner was Paulette Wilson also on 37, but 21 on the back nine. Winning the gross was Diana Mucklow with 21, and the nearest the pins went to Suzanne George and Paulette Wilson.

In the men’s event scoring was also tight at the top. In fourth place, and losing on countback was Michael McDonnell with 35, leaving Vice Captain Patrick Macklin in third also with 35 but with a better back nine. Tony King looked like he was going to pick up the main prize for a long time with an excellent 37 points but in the end he was runner up, with Gary Nettleingham in one of the last groups winning the Trophy with an outstanding 39 points. Simon Blair won the gross with 29 points, and the nearest the pins were picked up by Jim McCormack and Gary Nettleingham.

Sean O’Neill wins Div 2 Stableford & Mother Brown Trophy

Sean O’Neill receives Mother Brown Trophy (left) from David Allsop, and, together with Div 1 winner Paul Cooney, is congratulated as the Div 2 Stableford winner by the Captain (right).

We had 40 players for this month’s Stableford which took place in glorious weather on the South last Wednesday. It was the first time in a while that we saw the Division One scoring outperforming Division Two, albeit not by much. Winning Division One with an outstanding score of 41 points was Paul Cooney. He was comfortably ahead of Peter Shaw in second place on 37, who in turn was just ahead of Simon Ware-Lane in third on countback from Ralph Whyte with 36. Division Two was won by Sean O’Neill with a very good 38 points, ahead of David Allsop on 36 and Michael McDonnell with 35. Bob Pickles was fourth with 34. The gross today was won by Simon-Ware Lane just a point ahead of Ralph Whyte.

As with the Ladies this competition saw the rebirth of the Mother Brown’s Trophy. There were 11 of the field today who qualified and winning the quite unique trophy was Sean O’Neill with 38 points, ahead of David Allsop in second who beat Simon Ware-Lane and Ralph Whyte on countback with 36 points.

Lesley Henderson wins Lady Captains Trophy

Lesley Henderson (right) receives the Lady Captains Trophy from the Lady Captain.

Unlike our first attempt to play the Lady Captain’s Trophy in October when the competition was rained off, the weather on Tuesday was absolutely glorious. The results of the Stableford competition were as follows: in Division 2 in third place with 33 points, Kim Shawyer, runner up with 34 points, Deb Giles and winning on countback, Tracey Williams. Division 1 in third place with 36 points, Jane Reason, runner up with 37 points, Irene Meier-Boehm and winning both Division 1 and the Lady Captain’s Trophy, Lesley Henderson. The reinstated Mother Brown Trophy was won by Irene Meier-Boehm.

Car Parks Update

The Club car parks will be partially reopened over this week. The groundwork is not yet completed as part of the calçada has yet to be replaced. However we are able to permit parking for up to 24 cars in the car parks going forward. Please note that you must park ‘nose’ into the bays. These have been shortened to protect you and your car from the workings. As the rear of the cars will be overhanging the main road, we are not permitting parking on both sides of the roadway. Please park with care to yourself and your fellow members. Thank you.

Use of competition vouchers

Unfortunately the Board has decided, with immediate effect, that competition vouchers can no longer be used to pay for competition entries. A relook at the figures since we first permitted this in 2022 shows that over 60% of vouchers are being used in this way. The unexpected consequence is that we are dramatically reducing the amount that is spent with our supporting retailers, as well as ‘costing’ the Club €2000 per annum by not receiving the retailers 20% discount which is built into the value of the voucher. Please see below the stores where you can redeem your vouchers going forward.

Suzanne George and Orla O’Donohoe win November Medal

Medal Winners Ola O’Donohoe and Suzanne George

A lovely sunny day greeted the ladies for their medal round on the South course last Tuesday. However, challenging course conditions were most likely reflected in the scores.  Division 1 winner Suzanne George with a net 72, runner up Lesley Henderson net 74. Division 2 winner Orla O’Donohoe with net 78, runner up Karen Phillips net 80. The best gross was won by Val Tassell with a net 86.  Nearest the Pins’s were won by Irene Meier-Boehm (Div 1 Hole #7) and Gill Wyman (Div 2 Hole #4).

87 points wins Men’s Day AMAM

John Farrell, Sean O’Neil, Peter Shaw (Captain), Keith Collins & Ian Williams.

We had a field of 35 for the AmAm on Wednesday’s Men Day on the North Course. The rough had been cut back and made the course more playable which was reflected in a good average score of just over 81 across the field. Winning with 87 (43 on the back 9) were John Farrell, Keith Collins, Ian Williams and Sean O’Neill. In second also with 87 (40 on the back 9) were Peter Shaw, Rolf Eckhoff, David Allsop and Gerry McNamara. And in third also with 87 (37 back 9) were Richard Harrison, Rupert Mucklow and Graeme Tilmouth and their mystery player the Captain. We were also grateful to Keith Collins for stepping in at late notice.

White, Allvey, Cleary and Hume win Sunday Waltz

Brenda Allvey, Dennis White, Sean Cleary and Joyce Hume

A beautiful autumn day welcomed the field for Sunday’s Waltz Stableford. Fortunately we were not hampered by the mosquitoes as much as last week but there were still some challenging pins. Scoring was good with an average of 72,5 points registered. Winning with an excellent 80 points were Dennis White, Brenda Allvey, Sean Cleary and Joyce Hume. In second with 79 were Peter Shaw, Deb Giles, Daryl and Amelia Gabin. And in joint third with 77 were Richard O’Toole, Oonagh Tilmouth, Byron and Philippa Clancey equal with Cliff and Pam Saunders, Jane Reason and their mystery player Mark Till. Nearest the pins were won by Byron and Philippa Clancey. Thanks to Mark Till for stepping in to make our numbers work today which was much appreciated.

Clarification on Preferred Lies

Just to remind members that under our local rule when placing your ball it must be placed in the General Area. Accordingly, if on the fringe of the green the ball must not be placed on the putting green even if this is within 1 Club length,as the putting green is not included in the ‘General Area’

Definitions: General Area “The area of the course that covers all of the course except for the other four defined areas: (1) the teeing area the player must play from in starting the hole they are playing, (2) all penalty areas, (3) all bunkers, and (4) the putting green of the hole the player is playing.”

2023 Ranganathan Trophy

The 2023 Ranganathan trophy (the Monday\Friday roll-up’s annual Betterball competition) played last Monday, was won by Matt O’Driscoll and Sunder Advani. Awarding the magnificent trophy is organiser Peter Johnston.

Member’s Car Parks closed this week

This notice is to advise all members that the members’ car parks will be closed from Monday 13th November through until Friday 17th. This is the first stage of the construction of the new car park covers, which involves setting the concrete footings for the canopy supports. The covers themselves will be installed in early January.

We will be working with the construction company to see if we can open parts of the car park earlier than expected. In the meantime members should park in the visitors car park. Access by buggy to the clubhouse, via the buggy path will remain open throughout. Thank you for your understanding.

6th November 2023

Sunday competition plagued by mosquitoes

On Sunday, the field of 28 encountered some very challenging pins, lightning fast greens and at least for the first couple of hours a plague of mosquitoes all of which combined to keep the scoring quite low for an American Foursomes event with 32 being the average. Winning today with a very good 39 points were Chris and Judith Tarmey, and in second with 37 were David and Philippa Newman. There were four pairings on 36 points, Bob Jones and Jane Reason, Patrick Macklin and Tracey Williams, Ian and Christine Williams and Dermot and Agatha Merry. Nearest the pins were won by Jane Reason and Byron Clancey.

Cort and Harrison win Men’s Monthly Medal

Vice Captain, Patrick Macklin with Div 2 winner Richard Harrison.

Scoring in the monthly medal in both Division One and Division Two was not up to the normal standard with many tales of ‘what might have been’ told in the Spike Bar following the round.   Weather conditions were sunny with a fresh breeze from the west.  Due to recent rain buggies were restricted to the buggy paths.  The greens were running fast and that may have contributed to some defensive putting.  For the first time in recent memory there were no scores of two returned by any player. Division Two Monthly Medal winner was Richard Harrison with a net 75.  In division two the runner-up was Tony O’Loghlen with a net 76.  Winner of the Division One Monthly Medal was Philip Cort with a net 75.  Philip Cort also had the best gross score on the day with an 82.  In Division One the runner-up was Martin Burns with a net 76.

Fewer numbers than usual in Ladies competition

We had a small group of ladies for Tuesday’s Alliance Stableford competition. Participants got a little damp out there but it got rid of the pesky mosquitoes. The winners with a net score of 85 points were Jane Reason, Wendy Menzies and Svetlana Lavery.  It was the winning team all round Wendy won nearest the pin on hole 16th and Jane had a birdie on 14th. Well done ladies.  The Lady Captain kindly shared her Pink Charity cake made by Alison Leech which went down a treat.

The re-introduction of the Mother Brown Trophy (MBT)

The MBT (as in the old English pub song  “Knees up Mother Brown”) is a Stableford event open to any member (male or female) who has had orthopaedic surgery below the waist. It was started by Past Captain John Newhill (2007/08) but has not been run for a number of years. The splendid trophy (of an artificial knee joint) has now been returned to Quinta do Lago and, under the leadership of David and Hazel Allsop, it is intended to run the competition within the November Stableford events for the ladies (Lady Captain’s Trophy on 14 November) and Men (Monthly Stableford on 15 November). There is a men’s winner and a ladies winner of this fun event. Any member who wishes to enter simply needs to annotate their normal Stableford card for the above events with MBT at the top in order that the Office can identify entrants.
