Shaw & Giles win Coronation Cup

(L to R) : Lady Captain, 3rd place Barrie George & Lisa King, winners Peter Shaw & Deb Giles, 2nd place Julia & Richard Conway, the Captain.

The 2nd running of the Coronation Cup was held on Sunday over the South Course in perfect golfing conditions.  The Cup was first presented by Denis O’Brien in 2023 to commemorate the coronation of Charles III of the United Kingdom and this year once again Sociedade de Golge generously donated the prizes.  The Sunday competition was well supported by our membership with 32 pairs participating.

The first tee time was at 7.36 am so many pairs had a very early start.  Notwithstanding that, some early starters posted good scores that remained at or near the top of the leaderboard all day, notably, Barrie George and Lisa King, the Hendersons, the Fords and the Conways. Winners of the 2 ball Texas Scramble with a very great score of 44 points were Peter Shaw and Deb Giles. Runners up also with a great effort scoring 43 points were Richard Conway and Julia Conway. Third prize following a count back went to Barrie George and Lisa King with 42 points, 24 points on holes 10-18. Also scoring 42 points but losing out on count back were Cliff and Pam Saunders (23), Jim and Ness Renwick (22), Nick and Karen Phillips (21), Robert  and Susanna Ashton (20). Men’s nearest the pin winner was Jim Renwick and the Ladies nearest the pin winner was Svetlana Lavery.

Our thanks also to the Board and Jacqui Barry for organising a cake from Pure Restaurant ordered to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the foundation of our club CGQL in 1984.  The 40th Anniversary will be further commemorated during the year. The Captains congratulate our winners and thank all members who took part. Your participation made for a fine day in Quinta.

Another home win for Algarve League team

On Friday we welcomed the team from Serra de Monchique for our fifth match of the season, which was played on the South Course in glorious conditions. In every match we were giving shots, so strong performances were required. The team duly delivered! In the first match, Ralph Whyte and Suzanne George got us off to a great start, winning 2 and 1 against the top pair from Serra de Monchique. In match 2, Lesley Henderson and Peter Shaw also played really well but lost out on the final hole. Charles and Sally Robson were in the third match and put in an excellent performance to win 4 and 2. In the fourth game, Philippa Clancey and Barrie George overcame strong opponents on the final hole and in the final group, Keith Collins and Tony King, playing against very consistent and determined opponents, won 2 and 1. The overall score of 8-2 keeps us at the top of Division 2. After the match, we had a really convivial lunch in the clubhouse with the Serra de Monchique team, this being a big part of the ethos of the league. Thank you to everyone (24 so far) who has played in our cup and league matches this season and contributed to this success. The really hard work starts now as we begin a run of away games but we have created a very solid platform on which to build. Our next two matches are at Espiche on 27 May and at Serra de Monchique on 6 June. If anyone who has not already done so would like to make themselves available to play in the team, please email the league team captain, Tony King, at tonyking5903@gmail.com.

Catering Questionnaire

Thank you to the 182 members who completed the Food & Beverage questionnaire. We have a significant amount of feedback which will now be collated and evaluated over the coming weeks.

As previously advised members with relevant experience will be involved as part of the next phase, which is expected to take a number of weeks given the amount of feedback coupled with the various parties that will need to be consulted before any recommendations are made. In addition it is possible that the team conducting the review may need to discuss particular aspects of the questionnaire responses with a number of members.

Where there are areas of improvement that can be implemented quickly before the full report is completed this will be done and members advised accordingly. However, given that the review covers all aspects of our Food & Beverage provision it is important that the full recommendations are made having been comprehensively evaluated and this will take some time.

Nick Phillips and Ian Panto are May medal winners.

The Men’s Monthly Medal was held on Wednesday in blustery, sunny conditions.  We had 40 players, 15 in Division I and 25 players in Division II.  Stuart Watson, David Graham and Tony Garry each made a welcome return to competition in the Club.  ‘Twos” were recorded today by Nick Phillips, Charles Robson, Tom Barry, Bernard Dempsey, Donald Dempsey and Rupert Mucklow.

Division I winner was Nick Phillips with a net 68.  Runner up was Barrie George with a net 71, net 35 on the back nine.  Third went to Tony Garry also with a net 71, net 38 on the back nine. Division II winner was Ian Panto with a net 68 playing in the last group of the day.  Runner up was Richard O’Toole who had a net 69, net 34 on the back nine just ahead of third place winner Donald Dempsey also returning a net 69, net 35 on the back nine. Best gross was won by Ralph Whyte with a 77 that included an 8 on the fifth hole. Evidence of continued good play by Ralph – well done to him. Many thanks to all who played and congratulations to the prize winners

96 points win Ladies AMAM Stableford

Thirty two ladies took part in Tuesday’s competition. They were not sure if they would get all 18 holes finished without getting wet but thankfully it stayed dry. The members winning team in the AMAM Stableford were Laura Nettleingham,Val Harrison, Pat Desmond and Nicola McCormack with a great score of 96 points. Runners up with a score of 92 points were Suzanne George, Orla O´Donohoe, Sally Robson and Karen Phillips. Nearest the Pin winners were Div 1 Philippa Clancy and Div 2 Kathleen McManaman. After golf the Ladies had a chance to buy with Liz Esterl’s very colourful golfing range.

Stuart Woodman (1946 – 2024)

It is with great sadness that we report the death of Stuart Woodman, who had a long association with Quinta do Lago, particularly in its formative years. In the early 1970’s Stuart worked for Trafalgar House in their development in Quinta do Lago, and was for a time the Director of Golf of the Quinta do Lago courses.  Stuart was born in Reigate and attended Reigate Grammar School. The story goes that he wanted to be a scientist but was allergic to chemicals which drew him to the outdoors and golf. He joined the PGA in 1964 as assistant pro at Dyrham Country Club. He applied for and took the job in St Vincent Island and from there to St.Lucia, and eventually to Quinta do Lago. When Trafalgar House holdings in Quinta were sold he stayed on in Portugal and became a recognised golf consultant and teacher and held the status of advanced fellow of the PGA. Many of our older members will have known him as a presence around the golf courses of Quinta, and many will have benefitted from his sage advice regarding all aspects of golf.  His warm and friendly manner and willingness to help will be sadly missed by all who knew him.
